I'm using my lunch break to make
this post.
Step/Goal 4 still has not been completed as my
remaining colleague is still sick.
Regarding Step/Goal 5 - I just got out of my meeting
with my director regarding the presentation and my anxiety leading up to this meeting was high!
I explained to her how I intended to use what I have learned in this course to enhance the learning of our administrators at this presentation.
I explained to her how I intended to use what I have learned in this course to enhance the learning of our administrators at this presentation.
Naturally, she was curious as to what self-regulated learning is
and I used my additional resources I gathered to help explain it. I began by presented the articles I found that
describes the benefits of Self-Regulated learning for learners with
disabilities and another article for adult learners. I used these to
demonstrate the wide audience that self-regulated learning can be used by
successfully to enrich their learning.
I emphasized
that self-regulated learning will allow our learners to take more
responsibility for their learning by setting realistic, but challenging goals, gaining feedback,
monitoring their progress to remain focused on the task and determine if learning strategy is useful, maintaining motivation, for example. I also conveyed that through the process of
my demonstrating the thought process that goes into registering a medical
trainee with the University of Toronto will help our learners (admins) better
understand the process. Lastly, and most importantly, that by having the admins
set goals for what they want to get out of the presentation will not only focus
their learning, but motivate them to
actually pay attention. This benefits our office so that we are not being
constantly interrupted from our work to re-teach information presented in this
presentation indefinitely (which we are finding with current administrators).
Next, I played for my director the video I
found on YouTube called "UQx LEARNx Self regulation and self - regulated
learning” that can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRHRWXKU6bY .
This video not only addresses self-regulated learning, but also when learners are
having difficulty becoming self-regulated learners (such as our admins who may
be introduced to this pedagogy for the first time) so we know what to help address. An example of this is that motivation can decrease with age.
I obtained
my directors approval.
After Step/Goal 5 I have added an new step based on
the recommendations of my classmate, Stephanie. I will be practicing my
presentation on my colleague who has already seen the presentation for feedback
on Monday, March 2, 2020. I want to know if I am modelling too many processes
to the point that the administrators may tune out of the presentation. I also
hope to include my colleague who has been sick in this practice run if she is able
to come in to work on Monday so I can obtain her feedback.
