Self Regulated Learning - Inquiry Project

In order to track my progress I intend to use this blog in order to monitor my progression through my inquiry project for the course PME 800-001.

Distal Goal - to incorporate SRL, specifically goal setting into my presentation in the form of having administrators identify what they want to learn from the presentation and set expectations of what they expected to learn.

Goal/step
Due Date

Step 2 – gain approval of Director for desired outcome of presentation (i.e.- what information or message do we want our administrators to come away with).

Step 3 – create presentation based on feedback from colleagues and director on information to be addressed.

Step 6 –  Give presentation

a)       Have administrators identify their goals for participating in this presentation (i.e. – specify what they want to get out of it such as understanding the work permit process better, etc.). Encourage formulate ideas of how to achieve their goal. => model process for administrators.

b)      set out key ideas and information (i.e.- goals of the presentation) that will be discussed and what is expected of administrators

c)        Model behavior expected of new administrators in their role by demonstrating the registration process and what they are expected to submit/do.

d)      give administrators feedback on common misconceptions and issues that commonly occurs post-presentation and how to correct them.

e)      Allow time for learners to self-reflect on goal(s).

f)         Allow open discussion about questions or concerns, give examples to promote group discussion (i.e.- was their goal of the presentation achieved?).

Goal/steps 1-2 were completed ahead of schedule as I was part of a team meeting at the end of January 30, 2020 where my team and our director discussed the presentation that was decided I would give on March 5, 2020. Ahead of the game =].

Notes on Goal/Step 1: At this meeting I presented my distal goal for the presentation (as mentioned above) and engaged with my team for feedback as to what key items/ knowledge they wish to be addressed with the administrators. I asked for feedback as to what areas they felt the administrators they deal with were weaker and/or what information needs to be reinforced. We assessed that, especially new administrators, do not pay attention to the required documents that need to be submitted to my office for registering a new medical trainee. They constantly send the incorrect documents even if they have been in the role for years.
      Ideas to use this feedback:
  • will highlight the importance of sending correct documentation by the administrators through modeling the process
  • when modeling goal setting, use "learning how to submit correct paperwork" as an example to draw attention to it.
  • when discussing this item in the presentation, establish the expectation that paperwork will not be accepted if incorrect (our document submission system records when paperwork has been accepted or rejected).

Notes on Goal/Step 2: My Director was at the meeting with my team that occurred on January 30, 2020, so I gained her immediate feedback on what my teammates wanted me to address. She agreed that we do need to set boundaries so administrators do not become complacent with their work (i.e.- not caring what documents they submit to us to register a new medical trainee), but we must maintain an open dialogue so administrators do not feel like an island unto themselves.

  • compile a list of FAQs and create a resource for administrators to refer directly to instead of coming to us first. This FAQ can be frequently updated as new common questions arise; updating of list can coincide with updating of presentation.
